Ellaville City Officials Visit Capitol

02/20/2009

Atlanta- Ellaville city officials visited the Georgia Capitol on January 26 and met with their local legislative delegation as part of the Georgia Municipal Association’s (GMA) Mayor’s Day Conference.

Mayor David Theiss and Council Member Patricia Jones were among more than 700 city officials who participated in the annual conference. Both officials took a training course to further their understanding of how local government works with the State and Federal government to better serve their citizens. The visit to the Capitol gave city officials the opportunity tomeet with legislators and express their views and concerns about legislation affecting cities. Among the topics discussed were the homeowner’s tax relief grants, a proposal to cap property tax assessments, transportation funding and giving cities local revenue options, such as a Municipal Option Sales Tax, to provide property tax relief or help with capital improvement projects.

"With the state of the economy and the scope of the needs, it’s important that our legislators hear from cities about how some of the proposals will affect city government,” said Mayor Theiss “As always the legislative session is a busy time for Representative Cheokas and Senator Hooks but they made time to meet with us, and we appreciate their support for our hometown.”

Based in Atlanta, GMA is a voluntary, non-profit organization that provides legislative advocacy, educational, employee benefit, and consulting services to its 500 member cities.
